Wednesday 4/26/2006 - 23  Days Post Surgery

2am: Extending my endurance, flexibility or strength is a good thing. If I didn't occasionally push beyond my current limits my progress would remain static. However, when I do extend my endurance, flexibility or strength during the day, I have more discomfort at night. So I'm having a little more discomfort tonight. It's not in the area surrounding my hip and surgery, but a vibrating ache in my ankles and the lower outside of my calves. What all this means in a practical sense right now, is that the Percocet I just took will take 15-20 minutes to take effect rather than the 5-10 minutes last night. So, I'm up at the computer and Internet. In the time it has taken to write this, the discomfort is starting to subside and in about 10 minutes I will be asleep again. It also means that tomorrow I will feel fatigued as my body repairs and then the day after tomorrow, my endurance, flexibility and strength will be increased. And so I smile as I return to bed.

3pm: I no longer sit around for long periods at the computer, watching t.v. or reading. Walking, exercising, and just regular 'doing' are now taking much more time. I fatigue infrequently and have dull aches and relatively no pain. I no longer have pain getting in and out of the car.

If you were to ask how I was, my reply would be, "Just Great!". If you were a long time friend or close relative who hasn't seen me for over a year and thinks of me as a long distance hiker or bicyclist you would be surprised the first time you saw me if all you heard from me was responses like that without further details. You would probably rate how I was doing by comparing me to a person with the capabilities I had a year or two ago. You might even feel sorry for me now. But I spent so much time incapable of walking more than to or from the car, that I automatically compare myself to the person with the capabilities I had 1-2 months ago. I'm happy and feel great!
