Tuesday 4/25/06 - 22 Days Post Surgery

1am: Since I'm up every night for about 15-20 minutes either once or twice s night, I thought it was about time that I write some at this hour.

My left hip didn't like the position I was sleeping in so it squawked and woke me up. Rolling over at this point doesn't satisfy it quickly enough so that I can return to sleep so I've just taken 1 Percocet. While that is taking effect I usually find something to read on the Internet. The pain subsides much quicker that way because I'm sitting up and because I'm distracting my mind. I've now been up 5 minutes and the pain has mostly disappeared. In another 5 minutes I'll become foggy and groggy. Then I'll return to bed and to sleep.

The pain I experience in the middle of the night is significantly reduced compared to 1-2 weeks ago. I suspect that in another 1-2 weeks I won't require a Percocet to return to sleep. For now, I'm getting foggy and groggy so I'll talk more in the morning.

7am: I slept for 3 more hours and then 3 hours again after taking 1 more Percocet. Life is good. I'm going to visit a woman today who had her surgery yesterday. I've never met her, but she has been reading this website. So I think it's about time we met in person.

Again this morning there is tightness in the hip and leg but only very minor pain when I first started walking. Then that too subsided.

8pm: I've felt very good all day. I parked in the parking garage and walked around the TMC (Tucson Medical Center) campus to visit friends and have breakfast. I didn't carry my cane and didn't need it. I probably walked a mile. Later this afternoon I did a set of my routine stretch and strength exercises given to me by Megan, my physical therapist. Then even later I cycled on the stationary bike for 13 minutes. Earlier this even I used my cane when I walked because I felt tight and fatigued. I feel a little tight right now and when I stood up to walk across the room there was some discomfort for the first few steps.

I'm pleased with my progress, especially since I hadn't walked more than a dozen yards at a time for the last 8 months.
