Wednesday 4/19/06 - 16 Days Post Surgery

7am: Good morning. Pain and stiffness present, but low compared to the first 2 weeks.

11am: For those of you who are reading the daily journals, you must have been getting bored. Nothing new was really happening. I was getting bored. Well.... the times they are a changin'...

I tried walking 400 yards at one time, using my cane. I did just fine. 400 yards is close to a quarter of a mile. In my book we're making some real progress. I used to gauge my walking in terms of miles.

I couldn't believe that the doctor told me I had to wait until my next check up to bicycle. He said I could use the stationary bicycle. That didn't sound exciting to me. He actually didn't have to explain why. I knew that if I took a fall while everything they stitched up was still healing, I could split it open, and as a result dislocate the hip or cause an infection.

I did however, comply and rode the stationary bicycle today. It is probably good that I get in better shape on the stationary bike before I transition to my regular bike. After 10 minutes both quadriceps were tight and tired! Actually it is not surprising. I have had very little exercise in the last 8 months. Quite a bit of my muscle has atrophied and will have to rebuild. It felt good though.

8pm: It's later in the day now. Prior to having my 2 week check up yesterday I was restricted from submerging the incision in either the bath tub or the spa. Well today I can and did. I enjoyed it thoroughly. I was also restricted from using vitamins because I was on a blood thinner to prevent blood clots. All that is history now.

I'm going to say 'good night' to you now and watch some t.v. before I go to bed. I'm a little weary tonight.
