Who Why How   Brief Overview   Weekly Summary   Daily Summary   Read Journal   Monday 4/17/06 - 14 Days Post Surgery 7am: Good morning. The pain and tightness in the mornings has gradually slacked off and it is taking less time to become as fully active as I can at this stage of recovery. I am becoming more aware of subtle differences in pain and what actions cause what response. There are a couple of actions that cause quick sharp pain. The first is near my knee when getting in or out of the car. Second is in my hip and near my knee when walking even a short distance beyond the point of muscle fatigue. The third is again in my hip and near my knee, the first few steps after sitting. 3pm: I bought and am using a cane. I use it when I go outside the house and I have a tendency to point my toes out in order to compensate for the discomfort in my hip and knee as they fatigue. I felt 'proud' that I wasn't using a cane, that somehow I was a better person because I didn't need one. What foolishness! My goal isn't to feel proud! My goal is to walk correctly. Now that I've got my head screwed on straight, I can see that I am able to walk with a more normal gait for a longer period of time if I use my cane. In that way I reinforcing a proper gait. Every day I massage the incision and scar tissue. And, when Megan comes, which she did today, she massages the whole area very deeply, beyond the point that I tell her it is painful. because of that, most of the tightness has relaxed and the scar tissue has diminished. The bruising is almost gone, but I don't think that was a result of the deep massaging. The incision site is starting to itch as it heals. I felt well enough that we invited company over for pizza and board games out by the pool. It will be a very early evening. I will probably want to go to bed by 8pm. Last time Megan was here I went to sleep about 7pm. So I will say good night now. |
