Monday 4/3/06 - Day of Surgery

I flossed, brushed and gargled, but Chuck said that my breath smelled. I must be more stressed than I realized. He opened the car window on the way to the hospital. We're longtime friends, partners and lovers. I was reassured that he felt close enough that he would be honest.

At the hospital I checked in. They took vitals and everyone who came in contact with me asked me my name, how to spell it, my birth date and why I was there. They each verified that it was my LEFT hip.

Then I was given an injection and I remember nothing else until I woke in the recovery room and someone was taking my temperature every few minutes and putting more warm blankets around me.

I went in for surgery at 11am and by 1pm I was out of recovery and in my room. Three hours after surgery they introduced me to a walker and had me walk twice across the room and back. Amazing. The morphine from the surgery hasn't worn off so I felt little pain. Then I was tired and slept off and on while friends visited. I think they visited with Chuck while I felt too foggy to participate.

I had dry heaves off and on until 10pm and slept off and on all night. But it seemed to me that just when I fell asleep a nurse came in and turned on the lights to check  something on  either me or my roommate. I was too groggy to care.
