[read days 43-49 journal] After Monday 5/15/2006 - Surgery + 43-49 Days I am no longer keeping the summary up on a daily basis. I've started to return to a more normal life and activity level. However, I will keep a journal and post it weekly along with the weekly summary until I am able to do all that I did before. [read day 42 journal] Monday 5/15/2006 - Surgery + 42 Days On the upside Positive note I feel better than yesterday First Time I walked on one of the trails in the desert at sunset. I haven't been able to do this since last August. the saguaros are all in buds. It was beautiful. Walk Without aid All day today. With cane It is still under the bed where I left it yesterday Pain Mostly at night. Some aching throughout the day. Ibuprophen does the trick during the day. Last night Tylenol PM helped me sleep. Biggest complaint I'm still in a period of low energy. Thoughts, tidbits and recommendations Right now I need someone elses thoughts, tidbits and recommendations. [read day 41 journal] Sunday 5/14/2006 - Surgery + 41 Days On the upside Positive note I feel better than yesterday First Time I'm totally off Percocet Walk Without aid Most of the time With cane Some of the time when I felt I needed it. Pain Mostly at night. Some aching throughout the day. Biggest complaint Disruption of sleep at night Thoughts, tidbits and recommendations I thought that I was going to feel more normal by this time in recovery. [read day 40 journal] Saturday 5/13/2006 - Surgery + 40 Days On the upside Positive note I don't feel positive at all today. First Time Truly being in a funk all day! Walk Without aid Most of the time With cane Sometime Pain Mostly at night and it disturbs my sleep. Biggest complaint I'm in a fog from Percocet and lack of sleep. My last Celebrex was on Thursday and I'm didn't realize how it reduced the 'bone pain'. I need to rework my pain meds so that I feel better in recovery. Thoughts, tidbits and recommendations I feel like the walking dead. But this too shall pass. [read day 39 journal] Friday 5/12/2006 - Surgery + 39 Days On the upside Positive note I had lunch with Dr Donna, a fellow hip replacement patient. She gave me some ideas regarding pain and sleeping. Also she gave the the name of a book Heal Your Hips First Time I didn't try anything new. I just want to feel better and do what I can now do with more energy. Walk Without aid Most of the time With cane Still only late in the day when I have exceeded my capacity Pain No sharp pains, just dull aches when I first wake up and pain at night when I sleep. Biggest complaint I want more than I have. That is a recipe for disaster. Thoughts, tidbits and recommendations My biggest fear with my aches, pains and this roller coaster ride of recovery, is that this is not normal and something is really wrong. I have no reason to believe this is true and I will ask the doctor when I see him. [read day 38 journal] Thursday 5/11/2006 - Surgery + 38 Days On the upside Positive note My range of motion is close to normal First Time I didn't try anything new. Walk Without aid Most of the time With cane Only late in the day when I exceeded my capacity Pain Some aches, but not persistent. When Megan was testing and extending my range of motion, there was only one time that she hit my limit and my body responded with a sharp pain. Biggest complaint Not much to complain about today. Thoughts, tidbits and recommendations You can use the cane to help you, if you don't take it with you. If you walk past the point of fatigue and you don't use the cane, you will most assuredly pay for it later. [read day 37 journal] Wednesday 5/10/2006 - Surgery + 37 Days On the upside Positive note I'm really feeling positive regarding my recovery and future.. First Time I'm still taking it easy this week. Walk Without aid Around the house and condo complex With cane Less and less. Pain Still at night when I wake up until the Percocet kicks in. I expect that I will be in this sleep and pain meds routine for another month. The pain is not decreasing with any speed and the length of time I'm sleeping uninterrupted is not increasing with any speed. Biggest complaint No complaining around here. Thoughts, tidbits and recommendations hmmmmm.... no real thoughts today [read day 36 journal] Tuesday 5/9/2006 - Surgery + 36 Days On the upside Positive note I'm amazed. After doing spring cleaning in the bedroom yesterday I was expecting to have more pain and tightness today. I DO NOT! . First Time No sharp pain while extending range of motion. Walk Without aid Almost everywhere. First half of my half mile walk. With cane Last half of my half mile walk. I carried my cane but didn't require it because of fatigue, limping or pain. Pain Level 0-2 most of the day. Level 2-4 when I woke up in the middle of the night. Percocet time and then slept for 4 more hours. Biggest complaint Just one small complaint. My incision itches. Thoughts, tidbits and recommendations I believe that some of the aches and pains I have felt this last week are not necessarily because of too much activity. Some are because, my 'pain awareness center' blocked out low level pain as it was communicating higher level pain. Then as the higher level pain subsided I felt constant irritation and distraction of the lower level pain as everything inside is healing. It's just my theory for the increase in the ongoing low level pain. If someone knows of or understands this, please let me know. I'm curious. [read day 35 journal] Monday 5/8/2006 - Surgery + 35 Days On the upside Positive note After several days of low level activity I again have minimal pain. First Time Sit on floor, up, down, twist, turn and lift as I cleaned my bedroom and rearranged the books. Walk Without aid Around the house and condo complex With cane Some as I fatigued. I didn't walk any distance today. Pain Level 0-2 most of the day. Level 1-3 in the form of a dull ache during some activity. And of course at night when I wake up. I believe that will be the last to dissipate. Biggest complaint Constipation after all the antibiotics. Yogurt and overall diet is helping. Thoughts, tidbits and recommendations Sitting in an office type chair with your feet flat on the floor, and then rotating slowly to the left as far as I can go and then to the right is an easy way to help increase my range of motion in a range that has been resulting in pain. I can control the range with better precision so that I have less pain . [read day 34 journal] Sunday 5/7/2006 - Surgery + 34 Days On the upside Positive note I'm having a difficult time being positive today. Logically I know that I'm healing. Emotionally I feel that I will never heal, be pain free and able to hike or bike ride. First Time I'm going to relax again today. Walk Without aid Around the house and condo complex With cane Everywhere else and I didn't walk very far. I remained home most of the day. Pain Level 1-3 most of the day in the form of deep dull aches over the entire hip area. Biggest complaint I generally feel down. Thoughts, tidbits and recommendations What I think logically and what I feel emotionally do not always coincide. [read day 33 journal] Saturday 5/6/2006 - Surgery + 33 Days On the upside Positive note I woke up this morning in less discomfort than any day in the last 4 or 5 days. First Time Nothing, I relaxed today. Walk Without aid Around the house and condo complex With cane Everywhere else. I fatigued and limped easily today. Pain Level 0-2 most of the day. Level 2-3 in the form of a dull ache when I walk or perform any other activity. Occasionally a sharper pain when I move out of range.. Biggest complaint No complaining around here. Thoughts, tidbits and recommendations Someone needs to do a better job cleaning. It's all growing faster right now than I can keep up with it. [read day 32 journal] Friday 5/5/2006 - Surgery + 32 Days On the upside Positive note I had a good night and woke up in less discomfort than yesterday. First Time Realization that my recovery will take longer and that is OK. Walk Without aid I tried walking the 400 yards around the condo complex but tired half way. I cut through the middle and returned home. With cane Most of the day except when I was in the house. Pain Reduced from yesterday. There was still a dull ache deep in my butt muscles. Megan says it's my peraformis. Megan worked on the ligaments and tendons that are still tight. That increased my pain and fatigue later in the day to a level of 2-4. Biggest complaint Irritating pain and resulting fatigue. Thoughts, tidbits and recommendations I'm going to relax tomorrow. [read day 31 journal] Thursday 5/4/2006 - Surgery + 31 Days On the upside Positive note The truth is, that I'm not feeling positive today. First Time I'm in more pain and discomfort than at any time in the last 3 weeks. I overexerted without realizing it. My body didn't tell me until late last night. Walk Without aid Most of the day, but I didn't walk much. With cane Not very much today. I was still stiff from Tuesday. Pain Level 3-5 in some tendons and ligaments, probably from cycling on the stationary bike. Biggest complaint Pain is irritating, distracting and tiring. Thoughts, tidbits and recommendations I will increase my activity in very small limited time increments. For the time being, until my capacity extends easily, I will not rely on my body to tell me when I have reached my capacity. [read day 30 journal] Wednesday 5/3/2006 - Surgery + 30 Days On the upside Positive note It was wonderful walking along the Rillito River last night watching the sunset. First Time Nothing particularly new today. Walk Without aid Most of the day, but I didn't walk much. With cane Not very much today. I was stiff from yesterday. Pain The second time I woke up last night I needed 1 Percocet. The skin around my incision is still raw from the abscessed sutures. And I'm stiff an sore from all the walking I did yesterday. I must have overdone it. Biggest complaint The raw incision site. I tried to see the doctor today, but he was unavailable. I have an appointment tomorrow. Thoughts, tidbits and recommendations It is easy to over do it. My capacity and endurance have increased but are still limited. [read day 29 journal] Tuesday 5/2/2006 - Surgery + 29 Days On the upside Positive note I fell asleep again after waking up without taking any Percocet. I just rolled over and repositioned myself. First Time Exerted myself enough while exercising that I sweated! This is very good! I'm raising my activity level. Walk Without aid Most of the day. With cane 1/2 and 1 mile several times today Pain The second time I woke up last night I needed 1 Percocet. The skin around my incision is still raw from the abscessed sutures. Biggest complaint The raw incision site. I will see the doctor again on Thursday. Thoughts, tidbits and recommendations I don't know just yet. [read day 28 journal] Monday 5/1/2006 - Surgery + 28 Days On the upside Positive note I only used Percocet 1 time last night, but slept over 8 hours. First Time Walked 2 miles with my cane Walk Without aid Most of the day. With cane 2 mile walk Pain After I've slept for 2-3 hours my hip area aches. The first time I woke up I rolled over and fell back asleep before I took any Percocet. The second time I needed to take 1 Percocet. The site of the abscessed sutures is still raw and burns. Biggest complaint Continuing to be the raw incision site. I will see the doctor again on Thursday. Thoughts, tidbits and recommendations Over the last 8 months of inactivity my body has lost muscle mass, replaced it with fat and put on 8 pounds. I have not permitted myself to dwell on that issue until I could do something about it. It's getting to be time. [read day 27 journal] Sunday 4/30/2006 - Surgery + 27 Days On the upside Positive note I only used Percocet 1 time last night, but slept over 8 hours. First Time Another new range of motion. I never realized how many movements and motions I took for granted. Walk Without aid Around the house. My whole hip area feels aggravated today. It's not painful but there is a dull ache. Except for around the house I will probably use my cane all day With cane Mile and a half walk Pain After I've slept for 2-3 hours my hip area aches and I still take Percocet to go back to sleep. There is still tightness and the whole internal hip area has a low level dull ache. Biggest complaint The incision doesn't concern me as much today, but it still looks nasty and the surface area around it is sensitive. Thoughts, tidbits and recommendations Whenever (like today) I have a new pain or an increase in pain my mind thinks the worse. My mind thinks that the new pain signifies something is going wrong. The logical side of me realizes that any aspect of recovery is not in a straight line. The emotional side of me wants everything to progress in a straight line and when it doesn't, my emotions tend to follow the same line as my perceived progress. The truth is that my recovery is progressing regardless. [read day 26 journal] Saturday 4/29/2006 - Surgery + 26 Days On the upside Positive note My temperature is normal so my body is not fighting a systemic infection. First Time Nothing particularly new so far today Walk Without aid Everywhere except my endurance walk. With cane Mile and a half walk Pain None except after I've slept for 2-3 hours, just tightness Biggest complaint Same as yesterday. The incision concerns me. Thoughts, tidbits and recommendations I don't feel so full of thoughts today. [read day 25 journal] Friday 4/28/2006 - Surgery + 25 Days On the upside Positive note Megan (physical therapist) has helped me reach a new range of motion! First Time Nothing particularly new Walk Without aid All day - however I didn't go far With cane After my afternoon nap I used my cane every time I went outside. I feel all worn out. Pain Quick sharp pain only when Megan extended my range of motion a couple of times. Tightness at times but nothing more except the tenderness that has recently occurred around the lower half of the incision. Biggest complaint Same as yesterday. The incision concerns me. Thoughts, tidbits and recommendations My body is still healing from something major. It is not back to normal regardless of what I think or write on these pages. [read day 24 journal] Thursday 4/27/2006 - Surgery + 24 Days On the upside Positive note Doctor is not highly concerned about the change in appearance around the incision site. First Time Nothing new Walk Without aid All day With cane I brought it with me everywhere, but never needed it Pain The pain has reduce to the extent that I'm not going to use the detail subclassifications any more. Just a summary. Tightness at times but nothing more except the tenderness that has recently occured around the lower half of the incision. Biggest complaint Incision has become more red and tender. Thoughts, tidbits and recommendations When I sleep on my side I put a pillow between my knees. If I place it in such a way that the pillow is from my knees to and including my ankes it works best. If the pillow is not between my ankles also, then my ankles come together and torque my hip. I then wake up in pain a couple of hours later. [read day 23 journal] Wednesday 4/26/2006 - Surgery + 23 Days On the upside Positive note I feel great! First Time Getting in and out of the car normally with no pain. Walk Without aid Most always - about a mile+ today including a full shopping trip to Costco. With cane The last half of my long endurance walk. There is again a little discomfort when getting up after sitting stationary for a while. Thoughts, tidbits and recommendations My increased activity level with decreased pain feels wonderful. [read day 22 journal] Tuesday 4/25/2006 - Surgery + 22 Days On the upside Positive note I'm feeling better and more flexible every day First Time Cycled on the stationary bicycle for 13 minutes. Walk Without aid Most always - about a mile today With cane Later this afternoon and early evening when I was fatigued. Pain Last night 2-4 for a few minutes after sleeping 3 hours and then again 3 hours later when the Percocet wore off. Getting out of bed this morning There was tightness for a couple minutes but not pain! Sitting None! There is a little discomfort when getting up after sitting stationary for a while. Exercising or walking Very occasionally a level 3-4 when I stretch too far or twist in a position where I'm still not flexible Other discomfort Getting into the car. This pain has reduced but never gone away completely unless I use an adaptive entry by going seat first and then bringing in my legs rather than inserting 1 leg first.. Biggest complaint None! I feel so much better and I am able to be so much more active than at any time of the last 8 months that there is nothing that seems worthy of complaint. Thoughts, tidbits and recommendations Even though I was active prior to 8 months ago I have not been active in the last 8 months. So I believe that my recovery has not been based on prior activity, but rather the surgery technique and my current physical therapy which includes stretching, strength and retraining activities. [read day 21 journal] Monday 4/24/2006 - Surgery + 21 Days On the upside Positive note I've learned that someone who had MIS Hip Replacement Surgery today has been following my progress on this website! First Time Walked a mile today - with my cane of course. But a MILE! Walk Without aid Most always With cane 1 Mile! Pain Last night I think the pain at night is from staying in one position too long. when I wake up and the pain is just irritating enough to keep me awake, I take still take 1 Percocet and fall back asleep for 4 more hours. Next week I think I try using Ibuprophen only. Getting out of bed this morning There was tightness but not pain! Sitting None! There is a little pain when getting up after sitting stationary for a while. Exercising or walking Very occasionally a level 3-4 when I stretch too far or twist in a new position Other discomfort Getting in and out of the car. This pain has reduced but never gone away completely. Biggest complaint None! Thoughts, tidbits and recommendations Keeping a journal permits me to read and reflect on my progress. Without this journal, I think all of the detail of my recovery and progress would be lost in a blur. [read day 20 journal] Sunday 4/23/2006 - Surgery + 20 Days On the upside Positive note The use of a cane permits me to walk further and enjoy it more. First Time Nothing new today Walk Without aid Always within the condominium complex and other shorter distances or grocery shopping. With cane Longer distances. I carry it if I think there is a possibility I will fatigue to the point of starting to limp before I return. I took 1 Percocet and walked and sat for 10 minutes before I fell asleep for another 3 hours. I took 3 Ibuprophen and slept for another 2 hours. This is becoming the current normal routine. Getting out of bed this morning The pain in the morning has continued to remain low. Level 2-5 for 2-3 min then subsiding to a dull ache after some movement. Sitting 0 to 1 dull ache for the first hour in the morning. This also is becoming the current norm. Exercising or walking Level 3-4 through out the day, which is greater than it has been recently. Possibly because I've been more active for longer periods of time. Occasionally the pain increases sharply and quickly for a second when I get into or out of the car. At then end of the picnic my leg and hip were fatigued and they haven't recovered. Other discomfort The area around my stitch that is infected still. Biggest complaint Increased ache in the hip area today Thoughts, tidbits and recommendations I think that I over did it again. Occasionally the pain increases sharply and quickly for a second when I get into or out of the car. Other discomfort The area around my stitch that is infected Biggest complaint Nothing that comes to mind Thoughts, tidbits and recommendations If I don't have my cane with me, I can't use it. I need to remember to take it with me even if I don't think that I will need it. [read day 17 journal] Thursday 4/20/2006 - Surgery + 17 Days On the upside Positive note My gait and walking endurance have inproved First Time Nothing new today Walk Without aid Always except for my one distance and endurance walk each day. With cane 800 yards which is about half of a mile. Pain Last night I went to sleep without pain meds. After 3-4 hours, the pain woke me up at level 4-5. I took 1 Percocet and walked and sat for 10 minutes before I fell asleep for another 3 hours. I took 3 Ibuprophen and slept for another 2 hours. Occasionally the pain increases sharply and quickly for a second when I get into or out of the car. Other discomfort As I build my muscles from lack of use they get tired and burn for a few seconds Biggest complaint NO NONE NADA NOTHING Thoughts, tidbits and recommendations Again...the cane is very liberating. Using it permits me to walk faster, straighter, with less discomfort and for longer periods of time. [read day 15 journal] Tuesday 4/18/2006 - Surgery + 15 Days On the upside Positive note Using the cane is more liberating than I expected First Time Ted Hose not required according to the doctor! Walk Without aid Around the house and around the store. With aid I'm now using a cane so that I can keep a keep a proper gait after my muscles fatigue. If I don't use a cane, I'm reinforcing an abnormal gait when I start compensating in my walk for the pain. Pain Last night Same as last night and the night before. 5-7 after 4 hours when Tylenol PM wore off. I then took 1 Percocet, stretched, walked and then went back to sleep for 3 more hours. 1 more Percocet allowed me to sleep 3 more hours. Getting out of bed this morning The pain in the morning has been subsiding. 2-5 for 2-3 min then subsiding to a dull ache after some movement. Sitting 0 to 1 dull ache. Getting out of bed this morning 3-6 for 2-3 min then subsiding to a dull ache after some movement. Sitting 0 to 1 dull ache. Exercising or walking 2 to 4 through out the day - Any time the pain increased to a 4 I stopped the exercise to give everything a rest and a chance to recover. Late in the day the pain increased to 4-5 when I first started walking after sitting. Other discomfort None Biggest complaint After progressing to quickly the first week, this seems slow. Thoughts, tidbits and recommendations Walk or exercise a little every hour. [read day 12 journal] Saturday 4/15/2006 - Surgery + 12 Days On the upside Positive note I've been relatively pain free all day First Time Nothing new. Walk Without aid 75 yards x 3. Rest and recuperation is the order of the day. With aid Hand rails on the stairs, chucks shoulder and a walking stick as my muscles fatigued. Pain Last night 5-7 after 4 hours when Tylenol PM wore off. I then took 1 Percocet, stretched, walked and then went back to sleep for 3 more hours. 1 more Percocet allowed me to sleep 3 more hours. Getting out of bed this morning 4-7 for 2-3 min (several areas, sharp and dull). It all diminished quickly with movement. Sitting 0 to 2 dull ache. Exercising or walking 2 to 4 - Any time the pain increased to a 4 I stopped the exercise to give everything a rest and a chance to recover. Other discomfort None Biggest complaint I really want to be walking and active. Thoughts, tidbits and recommendations Give your hip time to rest and recover. [read day 11 journal] Friday 4/14/2006 - Surgery + 11 Days On the upside Positive note Megan, my physical therapist came today and helped me understand the increase in pain. If the pain is a normal part of healing, I can endure it. If I'm causing the pain or if the pain indicates something unusual, I want to correct it. First time Nothing new. Walk Without aid 100 yards several times though out the day and 400 yards around the outside of the condominium complex once. With aid None Pain Last night 5-7 after 4 hours when Tylenol PM wore off. I then took 1 Percocet, stretched, walked and then went back to sleep for 3 more hours. Getting out of bed this morning 4-7 for 4-5 min (several areas, sharp and dull). It diminished quickly with movement except for the sharp pain in the center of my left buttocks. Sitting 1 to 2 dull ache. Exercising or walking 2 to 8 - Over all the pain is reduced from a week ago.
