We arrived in Ha Noi at 11:00pm on a bus taking students home for the Tet holiday. I'm used to arriving anywhere through out the world and seeing a hoard of taxis all competing for the opportunity to take me to my hotel. That usually means they will take me to the hotel where they receive the greatest commission. I've learned to deal with that.

Let me start again... We arrived in the outskirts of Ha Noi at 10pm on a damp and drizzly dark night. There was only one bleak hotel sign and the only taxi was getting ready to depart with one of the students. My mind went into high gear and directed me to 'Think fast.... Take charge...Act!'. Actually, maybe Chuck was the one who took action.

Between the two of us we convinced the student and the driver to take us to the city center, find us a hotel and we would pay the taxi bill for us and the student. An hour later we were in a comfortable hotel room in the 'old quarter of Ha Noi, a short block from this lake, Hoan Kiem Lake (Lake of the Restored Sword). Thap Rua (Tortoise Tower) situated on an islet, can be seen in the middle of the lake.
