Ancient Mayan City - Tikal Guatemala

The area of what is now northern Guatemala and southern Mexico was once the center of the ancient Mayan people whose civilization covered part of 5 countries and extended from about 2000BC to about 1500AD.

During their time knowledge in the sciences, mathematics, agriculture and architecture was developed.  At the same time their ethical and spiritual thinking evolved.

Tikal National Park is near the center of this vast area and is designated by UNESCO as both a cultural and natural heritage site. It includes more than 4000 structures that date back to 800BC.. I had seen photos of this ancient city and knew that I must experience it myself.

We considered 2 options to travel there from Antigua. Traveling overland from Antigua to Tikal by bus on roads that had been destroyed by 36 years of civil war and political corruption was going to take about 16 hours. Flying there would take less than an hour and cost about $50US each. We chose to fly and save our time and energy for this mystical place.
