Latin America Overland (Jan-Mar 2003)Panama Cityphotolog (5): [ view]
I really did not know what to expect from Panama City. I had gained some insight from my preparations and readings but when we arrived, it meant little more to me than the city where we would start our overland travel of Central America. When we arrived, it was 9:30pm local time and numerous time zones and more than 24 hours since we left Tucson. We found a clean hotel in a decent area for $10 a night with no problem (thank you Lonely Planet) and went out for a short walk to orient ourselves to our surroundings. As is typical the first few days of any new travel adventure my adrenaline was fluxuating and now it was flowing high again. I wanted to see what was down the street and around a few of the corners. Panama City became our home for several days while we explored the city, the canal and the local rain forest. I learned from our taxi driver that when the U.S. controlled and protected the Panama Canal, quite a number of local people had well paying jobs providing services to 'us'. Now, those same people were having a difficult time earning enough money to support their families. Panama City photolog: [ view] 5 photos | |||||
