Latin America Overland (Jan-Mar 2003)Palenquephotolog (6): [ view]
Palenque, Mexico another ancient Mayan city is about 200 miles west of Tikal, Guatemala. The 2 are very similar and vastly different at the same time. Part of the difference stems from how each was excavated. While only parts of Tikal have been excavated fully and continue to be groomed and maintained, virtually all of Palenque has been excavated and the grounds free from overgrowth. However let me back up. As much as I enjoyed Palenque, I also enjoyed traveling to there from Tikal. I had read about taking a bus and ferry connection from Tikal via the border town of La Palma. Once more, this sounded like my kind of transportation experience. I was not disappointed. We departed for Palenque in the early morning mist of the jungle and arrived in Palenque later that afternoon. Palenque photolog: [ view] 6 photos | |||||||
