Latin America Overland (Jan-Mar 2003)Nicaraguaphotolog (18): [ view]
Nicaragua was one of those counties that I had no initial excitement about visiting. I knew so little. I remembered reading about the Sandinistas and the civil war in the newspapers. But that was years ago. I admit that I knew very little. From the moment that we crossed the border from Costa Rica into Nicaragua I was captivated. Lake Nicaragua borders Costa Rica and the Pan Am Hwy follows the lake's coast from there. The lake is about 100 by 50 miles and has an island in the middle created from a pair of volcanoes conjoined like Siamese twins. I felt foolish because I had never known of it. Nicaragua is special. Because there are so few travelers compared to Costa Rica and Guatemala it remains unspoiled by tourism. There are no billboards and slick companies run by outsiders trying to make money from the the traveler. Instead one must interact with the local people, become more intimate by asking them to tell and show you the special places and treasures. As each day passed we wanted to stay longer. Thus Granada was one of the destinations where we decided to spend extra days after we arrived. Tidbits-Currency in Nicaragua is called Cordobas. There was a conversion rate of about 15 to 1 when we were visiting. Dinner for 2 at Hospedaje Central was 120 Cordobas, the equivalent of about $8US. Nicaraguaphotolog (18): [ view] | ||||||||
