Latin America Overland (Jan-Mar 2003)Transportation Overviewphotolog (11): [ view]
I had always wanted to see the Panama Canal. Since the 6th grade thoughts of how it worked fueled my curiosity and desire to go there. In January 2003 with our new found Spanish language skills we were ready to fly to Panama City, see this engineering marvel and then travel north by local transportation through other Latin American countries. Most of the places that I wanted to to visit required leaving the Pan American Hwy. The Pacific Ocean and coastal towns on the west, Caribbean beaches on the east and rain forests, mountains and volcanoes in between. We are not surfers, long ago we stopped sun bathing but we have gained an appreciation of history and cultures so our route included more inland towns and villages. This overland adventure turned out to be everything I had hoped it would be. We interacted with the Hispanic and indigenous peoples, enjoyed the natural beauty and gained more of an understanding about how the U.S. government and businesses provide jobs and cause grief for these countries.
