Mc Donalds in Antigua, Guatemala
McDonalds-Antigua, Guatemala

Antigua is a colorful city of diversity. This photo demonstrates it well.

1. McDonalds occupying a hundred and fifty year old building with an armed guard outside and only a few people inside.

2. Indigenous women wearing traditional huipiles and carrying bundles and baskets on their head.

3. The people of Spanish descendents wear western style clothes and tend to look down on the indigenous peoples.

4. River stone streets built hundreds of years ago that provide the surface for walkers, bicyclists and a few automobiles.

After 2 nights in a hotel we rented a room in a house for 3 weeks.  Another, younger  couple had rented the other bedroom for 6 weeks. The 4 of us shared the house for the remainder of the time we stayed in Antigua. I enjoyed buying fruits, vegetables and breads in the local outdoor market place and then preparing evening meals in the kitchen. It had been quite a while since I had the opportunity to cook and I welcomed it.

On  the 3rd day in Antigua we enrolled in a morning Spanish language school, Tecun Uman. Four hours every morning for 3 weeks we each sat in a lovely outdoor patio with our individual instructor conversing in Spanish. On the weekends we visited villages around Lake Atitlan and Chichicastenango and hiked the local hills.

I could easily come back to Guatemala. While we were there, we played with the idea of renting a house t for 6 months some winter,  studying Spanish, volunteering at a local school and exploring Guatemala and Honduras in more depth.
