Guatemala was like a magnet while we traveled northward in Latin America from Panama. It drew us and did not permit us to squander days elsewhere. We were finally going to be in its embrace, choosing to stop first in the famous town of Antigua Guatemala, the previous capital city devastated by an earthquake in 1773. Parts of the town had been restored to its colonial splendor and other parts remained as they fell which is a testament to the power both of the earthquake and of the people who built the original city. In 1979 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tidbits-Currency in Guatemala is called Quatzales. There was a conversion rate of about 77 to 1 when we were visiting. A room at the Santa Lucia Hotel cost 100 Quetzales which was the equivalent of about $13US.
