off to Axell's Coffee Plantation
Axel, the owner of the house on who's lawn we had set up our tent, also owned and operated 3 coffee plantations. He let us travel up the mountain to his plantation in this 1976 Toyota Land Cruiser. This country is what Land Cruisers were made for; steep grades on rutted dirt roads. Before we set off on a hike he gave us a tour and a lesson in the coffee business from growing to processing and exporting. From higher on the mountain where we hiked, we could see out to the Pacific Ocean. The peak of Vulcan Baru was in the clouds so we never obtained a good view. Apparently it is normal for the peak to create its own weather system. We were going to hike to the peak but decided not use the extra energy just to be in the clouds.
