Day 24 - 68mi - Chesapeake, Virginia

We decided that it was time to start heading toward Hagerstown, MD where Chuck has relatives. I had been looking for a good route through or around the greater Washington DC area on the internet. I never found a route that I could follow easily all the way through to the Historic C & O Canal Trail so we headed inland to Chesapeake, Virginia and planned to continue on to Richmond.

The day started out sunny, progressed to drizzles and sprinkles. There were rabbits and turtles all over the place, including crossing the road. By the time we arrived in Chesapeake it was pouring. We stopped in a convenience store and were drenched. The people inside were nice and let us wait out the worst of it on one of their benches.

We needed to dry out and wanted an indoor room for the night. We found 2 motels right across the street from one another. One advertised a room for $36. The nicer one had no such advertising sign. Chuck, in a very bold fashion entered the nicer motel and asked for a room for $36. Their going rate was over twice that. The discussion continued until Chuck indicated that he was going to pay $36 for a room. He could give them $36 or the motel across the street $36 and judging by the parking lot, this motel had plenty of vacancies. Chuck was becoming very bold along this cycling adventure. We got the room for $36 and dried out nicely.
