Mother's Day 2002
Day 38 - 48mi - Unity Ohio We left Pittsburgh early Mother's Day Sunday morning. There was not a good route out of the city. We figured that our best chance to cycle without having to compete with the traffic was to start at daybreak on a Sunday. Our idea worked and we cycled along the north bank of the Ohio River leaving Pittsburg behind us. Everyone along the way seemed to still be asleep and the little coffee shops and diners were closed. After about an hour it started to rain again and we waited it out under a railroad trestle. We sat and munched on whatever we could find in our day packs. We were dry and it was a pleasant break The rain partially subsided and we continued cycling. As the day progressed we found few services. No grocery store, campground, restaurant or motel. Late in the afternoon the rain and the wind picked up and it was raining buckets sideways! We stopped at this awning to wait out the worst of it. But it never subsided. As afternoon progressed to night Chuck knocked on the peoples door to ask if we could camp their for the night. No one was home so we stayed! We watched families of married children come to visit their Mother across the street. We presumed that they had dinner and then one by one they left. It got dark and and we cooked soup on our backpacking stove and ate crackers and cheese. It was still raining but we were warm and dry. Then we rolled out our sleeping bags and went to sleep. After we cycled on we started to refer to this site as the connestoga wagon. Ohio to Lake Eriephotolog: 1 of 4 [ <prev| next> ] |
