Hong Kong

First Morning
Feeling Small Among Hong Kong Highrises

I was no more prepared for Hong Kong than I had been prepared for Nepal. The reasons were just the opposite though. Nepal lacked development and the prices were very inexpensive compared to prices at home. Hong Kong is developed, pricey and has the neon signs, jewelry stores and sky scrapers that shout it out.

We rented an inexpensive room by Hong Kong standards at $65 USD/night. It was 19 floors above a trendy departments store and a Starbucks Coffee House. It was culture shock! But I had a bath tub and hot water for the first time in 2 months.

I sat with my first cup of Starbucks coffee and reflected on the fact that what I had paid for the coffee would have fed me for an entire day in Nepal. I felt aware and unworthy of the wealth I had.
