Kayaking Diablo Lake

Since my first years of backpacking I have wanted to hike, kayak and backpack in North Cascades National Park, Washington.  When I looked at maps of that area I saw magic. One terminus of the Pacific Crest Trail ends there at the Canadian border.

After more than 20 years of backpacking I was finally there. The backpack from Diablo Lake to Stehekin on Lake Chelan was a taste of that magic.

We camped and kayaked on Diablo Lake for several day before we embarked on the backpack. There are several boat camp sites on Diablo Lake and many more on Ross Lake. We were considering a 'kayak pack' but mountains, passes and glaciers were calling.

The trail over the pass parallels Thunder Creek which runs the floor of the canyon in the background.
