Two Girls Collecting Dung for Fuel
Nepal Saraha 2 Girls collecting fuel

These girls are collecting dried elephant and rhino dung for cooking and heating fuel. They worked very seriously. There was no laughing or playing. I talked with them for a few minutes to find out what they were doing and then asked if I could take their picture.

Later in the day I stopped at a street stall to buy 'below the knee' pants. The street stall itself, owned by a husband and wife is about 12' x 12' and crowded with pants, shirts, skirts and other clothes. The store also serves as their home. The dressing room is their kitchen-bedroom combination. It was about 6' by 12'. I was bigger than any pants they had in stock. "No Problem", they said. They ran down the street and brought back a cousin, brother or some other relative that would measure me and have completely made by later in that day! He did and I paid 450 rupees ($7US) for them. I didn't have the heart to barter. I'm sure they would have accepted less. But why did I need them for LESS? I would have gone away with pants but feeling disgusted with myself.
