Bicycling to Find Rhinos
We left Pokhara and headed for Chitwan National Park. The bus ride followed the Seti River out of Pokhara to Damauli, where we climbed over the mountains to the Marsyangdi River and followed that until it joined the Trisuli River. We then continued down the east bank of the Trisuli River to Bharatpur where we turned east again and followed the outskirts of the Chitwan National Park to the town of Saraha. As we traveled further out of the Himilayas and into the Terai the rivers grew wider, the canyons less steep and the roads less windy. It was beautiful and occasionally I watched monkeys playing and running across the road. By comparison to Kathmandu and Pokahara Saraha is very small. We rented bicycles the very next day and cycled 15km up the Rapti River into the park looking for rhinos. Both elephants and rhinos drop 50 pound loads of dung at a time. The difference between the two is that elephants keep walking and rhinos stop. That is how one can tell if a rhino or elephant has been in the area.
